George Soros is a Hungarian and American investor, business magnate, philanthropist, political activist, and author.
George was born in Budapest, the son of Erzsébet/Elizabeth and Tivadar Soros (born Theodor Schwarz), a lawyer, author, editor, and World War I veteran. His brother was private investor and philanthropist Paul Soros. His family was Jewish.
George’s family changed their surname to Soros in the 1930s, to avoid anti-Jewish sentiment. During the Holocaust, his family survived by using forged documents to pose as non-Jews. George’s father saved many other Hungarian Jews.
George moved to England in 1947, and to New York City, U.S., in 1956.
George is married to businessperson Tamiko Bolton, who has Japanese ancestry. He has three children with his former wife, German immigrant Annaliese Witschak; and two children with his former wife, historian Susan Weber.
George’s paternal grandfather was Moritz Schwartz (the son of Meinhard Schwartz and Esther Sternberg). Moritz was born in Baktalórántháza, Baktalórántházai, Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg, Hungary. Meinhard was the son of Josef Schwartz.
George’s paternal grandmother was named Bertha Mayer. Bertha was born in Satu Mare, Romania.
George’s maternal grandfather was named Mor Szucz/Schwartz.
